One of the most significant extratextual forms of evidence in textual analysis is attention to the understanding of the original audience and to the way the text was reflected in the discussions that emerged after its production. On the other hand, according to the principles of Sunni hadith jurisprudence, the Companions’ understanding of the Prophetic tradition holds a unique position, and attention to it can be instrumental in resolving theological disputes. Accordingly, reliance on the Companions’ understanding is notably evident in the research of Allamah Mir Hamid Husayn, a theologian and scholar of Imamate, particularly in his interpretation of traditions concerning the Imamate of Ahl al-Bayt. Accessing the Companions’ understanding of traditions is impossible without careful examination of Sunni sources and accurate analysis of the reports that convey their understanding. This is an effort that Mir Hamid Husayn successfully accomplished in his time. The Companions’ understanding has not always been transmitted to us in a uniform form and has appeared in different manifestations. Mir Hamid Husayn’s references to the Companions’ understanding can be categorized and presented in at least five modes. In four of these modes, the Companions’ understanding is employed to strengthen the indication of the hadith toward Imamate, while in the fifth, the Allamah’s critical perspective toward a Companion’s interpretation becomes evident. These methods can serve as a model for researchers in examining the meanings of other traditions in theological disputes. The aim of this study is to examine and analyze the methods employed by the author of Abaqat in utilizing the Companions’ understanding in interpreting hadith through a descriptive-analytical approach.
