After the Qur'an, hadith is the most important source for understanding religion, and its authentication is regarded as one of the principal challenges shared by the two major Islamic traditions. The Sunni approach in this field is based on the analysis of chains of transmission and the identification of narrators, and relying on a narrator’s report as evidence is contingent upon establishing his integrity and precision. In Abaqat al-Anwar, Allamah Mir Hamid Husayn, adopting a comparative approach in engaging with Sunni scholarship to establish the authenticity of traditions concerning the Imamate of Ahl al-Bayt, employed systematic methods and primarily focused on isnad-based validation of traditions. Using a descriptive-analytical method, this article examines the Allamah’s approach through two principal categories: specific and general authentication of narrators. In specific authentication, methods such as reputation, widespread attestation, and explicit declarations by scholars assessing narrators are employed to establish their status. In general authentication, the Allamah evaluates narrator reliability through four principal categories: first, authentication based on personal characteristics of the narrator, such as being a Companion or Successor; second, authentication based on the presence of narrators in the chains of authoritative works, such as the Sahihayn and the Musnads of Ahmad ibn Hanbal and Abu Hanifa; third, authentication based on the manner of transmitting traditions, including narration from trustworthy teachers and Ahmad ibn Hanbal’s recording of hadith; and fourth, evaluation of authenticated chains of transmission, in which the presence of a narrator serves as a criterion of reliability. This study demonstrates that the methodology of Allamah Mir Hamid Husayn constitutes a systematic combination of rijal and isnad analyses that contributes to strengthening the reliability of traditions.
