Mu'alla ibn Khunays was one of the prominent companions of Imam Ja'far al-Sadiq, and little independent research has been conducted on his role in the formation of the fundamental concepts of Imami thought. He was not merely a transmitter of hadith, but also a bearer and interpreter of a layer of Imami thought that later crystallized within the theological system of Shiism. Using content analysis of the narrations transmitted from Mu'alla ibn Khunays, this study examines his thought on Imamate across six dimensions: knowledge and recognition of the Imam, loyalty and disavowal, obedience and following, conditions of Imamate, and the spiritual ranks and offices of the Imam. The findings show that, according to Mu'alla, knowledge of the Imam is a condition for the acceptance of acts of worship and a cause of seeing the Noble Prophet and Amir al-Mu'minin at the moment of death. Loyalty and disavowal are regarded as signs of true faith and as the boundary between faith and hypocrisy. Obedience to the Imam entails genuine companionship with the Imam and the continuation of the divine tradition throughout all ages. Regarding the conditions of Imamate, Mu'alla emphasizes purity of lineage, divinely granted knowledge, superiority, and asceticism as the principal conditions. The ranks of the Imam include ownership of the earth and a central role in establishing security. Concerning the offices of the Imam, Mu'alla emphasizes guidance and ontological authority. Therefore, Mu'alla ibn Khunays was among the earliest interpreters of the intellectual framework of Imamate in the school of Imam al-Sadiq and played an important role in the formation of Imami theology.
