The principal aim of this study is to elucidate the role and pivotal position of the divinely chosen figures within the very fabric of religion, by uncovering—through the lens of the Qurʾan—the deeper dimensions of the relationship between religion and a living, concrete truth embodied in a specially chosen human being, namely the prophet or the imam. Through this approach, the research seeks to clarify the concept of religious authority (marjaʿiyyat dīnī) within the overall religious system and its function in guiding and elevating humanity, drawing upon the most fundamental religious source: the Noble Qurʾan.
A prevalent assumption regards the divinely chosen merely as intermediaries tasked with conveying revelation and, at times, implementing religious rulings—a minimalist view that reduces the reality and status of the Imams to that of executors of legal commands, a role theoretically assumable by others as well. Contrary to this perception, Qurʾanic revelation articulates a comprehensive relationship of identity and inseparable companionship between religion and the divinely chosen human being across all dimensions. This ontological and functional maʿiyyah (togetherness) can be demonstrated by examining both the centrality of religion as oriented around the chosen human being and the distinctive role and functions entrusted to him.
The study identifies two principal spheres of activity for this divinely appointed guide: first, his function in relation to religion itself, and second, his role vis-à-vis the community of believers. Together, these domains reveal his unique status as the locus of religious authority within the divine order. The final step in establishing this inseparable companionship lies in demonstrating the irreplaceability of this role within Qurʾanic teachings. By examining this dimension, the research arrives at the Qurʾanic divine norm (sunnat ilāhiyyah) of manifesting religion alongside a particular human embodiment, inseparable from it and essential to its realization.
