The religious authority of the Ahl al-Bayt constitutes one of the central and practically significant themes in the field of Imamate studies, as it encompasses many of the essential roles and functions of the Imamate. Although the Qurʾan and the hadith literature address this issue in considerable detail, Imāmī scholars have paid comparatively limited attention to its various dimensions and implications. The principal aim of the present study is to explicate and substantiate the different grounds underlying humanity’s and religion’s need for a religious authority.
According to the guidance of Imāmī traditions, after the Prophet Muḥammad, the Qurʾan and the Prophetic Sunnah alone are not sufficient to ensure proper human guidance. The coherence and stability of religion lack meaning and efficacy without the explanation and interpretation provided by a legitimate religious authority. Acting solely upon the apparent meanings of the Qurʾan and the Prophetic Sunnah, without recourse to such an authority, leads to misguidance and loss. The necessity of the continual presence of divinely appointed individuals—who, as God’s representatives, exist throughout history to address the needs of both humanity and religion—is thus self-evident. These figures bear responsibility for explicating religion (the Qurʾan and the Sunnah), responding to emerging questions and challenges, resolving disputes, and administering society in accordance with religious teachings.
Methodologically, this study is structured into two main sections. The first analyzes the various aspects of humanity’s need for religious authority, examining concepts such as guidance, comprehensive governance and management of human affairs, and the role of the religious authority in eliminating disagreement and confusion. The second section focuses on the function of the religious authority in ensuring the subsistence and endurance of religion, addressing themes such as “the religious authority as the interpreter and legislator of religion,” “the religious authority as a safeguard against religious deviation,” and “the dependence of the vitality of religion upon the religious authority.” Through this analysis, the study demonstrates that both human guidance and the very life of religion are intrinsically bound to the presence of a divinely sanctioned religious authority.
