Among the foundational beliefs of Imāmī Shiʿism regarding the Ahl al-Bayt is their status as religious authorities (marjaʿiyyat dīniyyah). This belief is rooted in the statements and teachings of the Prophet Muḥammad, who himself established the religious authority of the Ahl al-Bayt. The present study first offers a conceptual clarification of the religious authority of the Ahl al-Bayt and then, drawing on rational and transmitted evidence, explicates the defining characteristics of a legitimate religious authority
Based on the available evidence, the essential attributes of a religious authority include: divine designation, comprehensive knowledge of religion and the Book of God, immunity from error and sin (ʿiṣmah—infallibility), legislative authority (wilāyah tashrīʿiyyah), priority in governance and disposal, superiority over others, and the obligation of obedience and compliance. In addition to outlining these characteristics, the study identifies—on the basis of Prophetic reports—the concrete instances of religious authority after the Prophet. It argues that the only figures who can be shown to possess all of these attributes in full are the Ahl al-Bayt.
Methodologically, the article relies on Prophetic traditions that are accepted by both Shiʿi and Sunni sources, including the traditions of al-Thaqalayn, the Ark (Safīnah), Security (Amān), the Stars (Nujūm), the Gate of Repentance (Bāb Ḥiṭṭah), the Twelve Successors, Ghadīr, Purification (Ṭahārah), Guidance, the Obligation of Obedience, and other shared narrations. These reports collectively substantiate the divine election and appointment, special knowledge, infallibility, authority, superiority, and obligatory obedience of the Ahl al-Bayt, leading to the conclusion that they alone fully embody the qualifications of religious authority in Islam.
