English

Imamate is regarded as one of the most foundational doctrinal principles of Shiʿi Islam and has, from early times, been a subject of sustained discussion among scholars of both Sunni and Shiʿi traditions. Researchers have approached the topic through diverse lenses. Traditionists, drawing on hadith, have articulated Imamate through titles such as Ḥujjat Allāh (God’s authority), Khalīfat Allāh (God’s vicegerent), and ʿĀlim Rabbānī (divinely guided scholar), whereas theologians have explained it within the conceptual framework of al-riyāsah al-ʿāmmah (general leadership). These varied formulations suggest that Imamate is not confined to a single interpretive paradigm and may be examined through additional conceptual perspectives.
This article proposes to explicate Imamate as “religious authority”. It argues that this perspective possesses distinctive features and that its significance can be demonstrated from several angles, including the existential rationale for the Imam’s presence, contemporary audiences and socio-cultural contexts, the intellectual and doctrinal level and needs of the audiences, and the overall demonstrability and argumentative capacity of the approach. On this basis, the concept of “religious authority” is presented as capable of initiating a new discourse on Imamate and expanding the analytical vocabulary through which Imamate studies may be developed.
Accordingly, the article seeks to introduce this approach with precision by clarifying its necessity and evidentiary foundations and by articulating its benefits and practical-theoretical functions. While the underlying substance of “religious authority” can be traced within the legacy of Shiʿi traditionists and theologians, the topic has not enjoyed an extensive history under this specific description and title in Shiʿi intellectual history, and relatively few studies have examined Imamate through this lens. For this reason, the article considers “religious authority” to be among the newer approaches within contemporary Imamate thought.
